Hands-off control

A screen recorder you drive from the keyboard.

Start, pause, and stop a Mac screen recording with global keyboard shortcuts. The recorder stays out of the shot, and your hands stay on the app you are demonstrating.

Why it matters

Clean takes start and end off camera

Reaching for a recorder button puts the recorder in your video and a stray cursor move in your take. With global shortcuts, the recording starts while the demo app already has focus and ends before you touch anything else.

Pause between sections instead of recording dead time, and re-record a selected area without rebuilding the capture frame. Every shortcut works while Autocuts runs in the background.

  • Start and stop without showing the recorder pill
  • Pause and resume between sections of a walkthrough
  • Record a selected area straight from the keyboard
  • Check every active binding in the settings window

The global shortcuts

These work system-wide while Autocuts runs. The settings window lists every registered binding.

Which keyboard shortcuts control a recording?

Option+1 starts or stops a screen recording, Option+2 pauses and resumes, Option+3 records a selected area, and Option+4 stops and keeps the take. Control+Option+Space opens the screen switcher, and Control+Option+Right or Left records the next or previous screen. The reference version lives in the keyboard shortcuts help article.

Do the shortcuts work while another app has focus?

Yes. The shortcuts are global and work system-wide while Autocuts runs, so you can start, pause, and stop a take from inside the app you are demonstrating without showing the recorder in the capture. Combine them with automatic zoom and the recording edits itself while you work.

How does the screen switcher work on a multi-display Mac?

With the switcher open, the left and right arrow keys highlight a display, the space bar switches the recording to it, Return confirms, and Escape cancels. The recording keeps running while you switch, which suits longer walkthroughs that move between displays.

Record hands-on, control hands-off.
